After graduating from Hamline University in 1987 with a degree in Business and Political Science, Steve Shafer started his career with Employee Benefit Plans (a third party Administrator) as a Sales Consultant.  Steve worked with employers ranging in size from 200 to 5,000 employees. He acted as a liaison to local and national sales consultants to assist and administer their client’s self-insured plans.  Steve gained valuable knowledge and insight regarding self-insured medical programs during his 3 year tenure with EBP, and in 1990 he decided to direct his career focus toward helping local business owners with their employee benefits programs.

In 1990 Steve started his own company, Health Insurance Consultants, Inc. and for the first few years ran his own one-man show, gaining more knowledge and clients on a steady basis.  Over the years, Steve learned as much as he could about all areas of insurance (Health, Dental, Life, Disability etc), by adding to his knowledge base, he gained yet more clients and was fortunate enough to add more employees to help him service his growing customer base.

Health Insurance Consultants is officed in South St. Paul, Minnesota. This location allows us to be very accessible to our clients which range in location from Western Minnesota, the Twin Cities, and portions of Wisconsin.  Steve is licensed in many states, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, New Jersey, California and Minnesota to name a few.

Our current clientele consists of Printers, Architectural firms, Trucking companies, engineering and manufacturing companies, school districts and banking institutions.  Steve’s customers will speak to Steve’s abilities and his relationship success with his clients.  Health Insurance Consultant’s client retention ratio is in the high 90’s and Steve still enjoys working with clients that he first attained back in 1990 when he started Health Insurance Consultants, Inc.
